Looking in Our Own Eyes

ALL OF US KNOW THAT WE are what we eat, and exercise can make us feel great. While there are many things we do not control in life, we can control what we eat and how we do or do not exercise. Even when we have limitations there is always SOME kind of exercise we can do.

Today is July 4. Holidays are a great time for us to look into our own eyes and ask ourselves what we can do to have a better life.

These days too many of us depend on convenience foods, and do not make time to engage in the art of cooking.  I say “art” as cooking IS an art.  Not being one to like recipes, I find it fun to be creative and discover what dishes I can make with whatever food is around.  Cooking is THE most important thing that we can to do stay healthy.  You know the old expression “You are what you eat!” That is true.

Any favorite recipes to share?

Five Steps to Better Health February 4, 2011

FIVE STEPS TO BETTER HEALTH

Get ready to feel better.  The following five steps are not easy, but if you can take these five steps, your life will improve.

 STEP ONE: STUDY YOUR SCHEDULE

If you and I want to feel great, we have to eat the right foods and exercise.  This takes planning. While we wish that our lives could fall magically into place they do not. We have to make diet and exercise a priority, and that means scheduling time for food shopping and cooking and for exercise.

STEP TWO: INTENSIFY YOUR DISCIPLINE

Without discipline we are lost.  It becomes difficult to push our plates away when well-meaning relatives insist we have a second helping of a dish that has taken hours and hours to prepare ~ “just for us.”  It becomes hard to excuse ourselves early in the evening because we must get up in the morning to exercise before work.  One of the hardest challenges is to stick to a diet and exercise plan when surrounded by people who do not care much about diet and exercise.  We must call on an intense level of discipline in order to stick to our goals.

STEP THREE:  CALL ON YOUR PATIENCE

It takes time to make changes.  Rome was not built in a day, and we are not going to lose thirty pounds in a day either.  For those of us who have a lot of weight to lose, the road to happiness is a long road, and we must enjoy ourselves along the way, as we learn to make food less of a priority in our lives. For those of us who have physical mobility problems and disabilities, we must have patience as we do the recommended exercises and therapies.  We can become more mobile than we have been, if we have patience.

STEP FOUR:  REMEMBER TO LOVE

First and foremost, we must love ourselves. We must love ourselves enough to have the courage to make the changes we need to make in order to live happier and healthier lives.  When we feel depressed and angry that we are not changing as fast as we would like, we need to give ourselves a huge dose of love.

STEP FIVE:  BE SURE TO LAUGH

Ha Ha Ha, and say it again, Ha Ha Ha. Let’s be silly, let’s be sarcastic sometimes, and yes, let’s be downright ridiculous.  We need to laugh at ourselves and stop taking life so seriously.  Now that may appear to be a contradiction when we are trying so hard to plan our schedules, discipline ourselves, have patience as we make changes and be loving and kind to ourselves.  But the laughter and fun is our biggest reward, and without it we are surely to give up too soon.  Laugh and laugh and laugh, and as we laugh, we become exuberant and ready to take on another disciplined day.

I can do it, you can do it, we can do it!

Is Over Eating Worth It? November 24, 2009

With Thanksgiving on the way, it is time of year to think about strategies to avoid over eating at the holiday feast. Each of us needs a plan to avoid that “I cannot get up off the sofa” feeling.  Here are some strategies that have been helpful to me the past few years that I am happy to say, were not Thanksgivings where I ate so much I felt sick.

First of all, as I am the cook on Thanksgiving, I consider all the tasting I need to do, as part of my breakfast.  Our turkey dinner is an evening meal, and when I prepare the stuffing in the morning, and taste it, all those calories count as part of breakfast.  Then lunch on Thanksgiving day is light, but filling enough that I will not feel starved by dinner time.

When I serve my plate at dinner time, I take just a tiny bit of each food. There are usually so many foods, that to take a regular portion of each one, would be simply too much food to eat.  Or sometimes instead, I serve myself regular portions of several foods, and choose not to eat everything being served.

Once I sit down at the table, then it is time to remember to eat slowly. As the cook this is often easy for me, as I find myself jumping up from the table quite often to get something from the kitchen.

In our family, we do not have desert until a couple hours after the meal.  Desert time can be the hardest time for me as thoughts play in my mind such as “oh well, I only eat pumpkin pie once a year.”  This year I am going to eat a small serving of desert, as I do not do well on sweets and if I overeat sweets on top of a heavy meal, I am sure to feel ill by the time I go to sleep.

When cleaning up the kitchen, dividing the left overs and putting things away, it is important to remember that the meal is OVER and this is not the time to grab one last bite of this and that.  Those bites can easily add up to an additional 500 calories.

If you like to count calories as I do, you might enjoy the free website called www.sparkpeople.com.  It is very easy to track your calories all day long. If you would like to visit this site, be brave enough to figure out how many calories are in a Thanksgiving dinner. Someone told me the other day, that he read an article that estimates that the average person consumes 4500 calories on Thanksgiving day. That is scary!!!

This is a great time to practice mindfulness, and pay attention to what we put onto our plates on Thanksgiving AND the day after and the day after and the day after and for the rest of our lives.

I wish you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. It is a time to give thanks for all that we have in our lives. Even if we have troubles in life, that of course everyone has to some extent, most of us have much more than most people around the world.  Let us take this day to be grateful for the bountiful lives, and think about how we can help others in our world.

CAN YOU COMMENT AND TELL US HOW YOU WILL AVOID OVEREATING ON THANKSGIVING???

Distance Healing October 22, 2009

Fall Green Leaves EditedWhen someone is ill, send love through distance healing.  Or perhaps you may call it “prayer.”  I believe that sending our love or sending our prayers creates a real a energy which travels thorugh the cosmos to the person in need.

Sometimes I like to visualize an image from nature, and then visualize that this image is saturated with healing.  Now it is time to imagine that I am sending this image to the person in need of healing.

Today I have one friend who is having a chemo therapy treatment, and anohter friend who has just been admitted to the hospital with a possible infection. I also spoke to a friend today who is mourning the recent passing of her mother.

My healing image today is of green leaves: leaves that are full of health and vitality.  I am pouring my love into these leaves and projecting thoughts of this image to my three friends.  This is my way of praying for those I love.

Acupuncture Plus October 19, 2009

As a woman almost sixty-nine years old, I send my love and thanks to the practitioners of acupuncture.  When I have had physical challenges, it has always been acupuncture and boiled Chinese herbs that have brought me back into good health.

For those of you who have never had an acupuncture treatment, let me assure you that the tiny tips of the needles that are placed under your skin, do not hurt.  It is not like getting a shot or vaccination. Yes, at times you can feel the tip of the needle as it is inserted, but it is a momentary “ping” and then you do not even feel the needle.  What you will feel is an energy of relaxation begin to spread from one end of your body to the other. And you will realize that you are more than your physical body. This treatment is balancing your entire energy system.   You may drift off to sleep during the treatment of simply relax into beautiful thoughts and waking dreams. When the treatment is over you may find that whatever aches and pains you walked in with are gone or diminished.

Why acupuncture PLUS?  Because it is the acupuncture PLUS the boiled herbs that have for me, produced miracles. Okay, so the herbs do look a little strange and you may not appreciate the smell in the kitchen while you boil your weeks supply for a good hour and a half.  And when you drink a portion each day, you may not find the flavor to be your favorite.  But WOW, after taking herbs for only a few days, you may notice how much better you feel.  And if you take boiled herbs regularly week after week, check out your skin, hair and finger nails.  I bet you will notice an improvement!!!

Yes, these treatments are not cheap, but if you are having a health challenge, or simply do not feel that energetic, it might be worth considering what else you can give up in your life in order to pay for the treatments.  And if you have absolutely no money for treatments, this may be the time to tell everyone not to give you birthday presents, but instead to put money into your “Acupuncture and Herbs” piggy bank.

Acupuncture and herbs make a HUGE difference!  Take these treatments and feel better.

Pamper Yourself, with FRESH Food September 15, 2009

Comforting ourselves with food is a dangerous activity.  We all need to eat to survive and be healthy.  It is all to easy to eat the wrong foods and gain unwanted pounds.  Fat laden food may comfort us momentarily (a la donuts and cake) but in the long run, do not bring the energy and vibration we need.

Pamper Yourself by eating FRESHLY COOKED FOOD

In our busy lives, it is all to easy to eat left overs or grab take out food.  This food has no “energy” and does not bring us the sense of comfort that we need.  Fresh food makes you feel good while you prepare it, and the fragrant aroma is also comforting.  While a donut may give you a quick high,  there is nothing more comforting than home cooked food.  Try to arrange your schedule so that you have time to cook.  Prepare lunch in the morning if need be.

The following advice is for all of us, especially myself, as I can tend to overeat in order to relax.

Take care of yourself with good food.

Here are some suggestions for comfort foods that do not have alot of calories.

BREAKFAST: Indian Spice Egg White Scramble

Beat the whites of three or four eggs until frothy and mix in a teaspoon of dry turmeric and dry cumin.  I hear that these spices are very good for most of us, and they give the egg whites a nice taste.  Spray a little Pam into a non stick fry pan, and when the pan is hot, heat up a half cup of veggies. When the veggies are hot, add the spiced egg whites and scramble with the veggies.  Top with several sprays of Braggs Liquid (find at your health food store) for flavor and for amino acids, without calories.   Skip the toast and this is a great and comforting breakfast.

LUNCH:  Veggies Galore

Cut up veggies into small piece and steam until tender but  not mushy.  I like green beans, mushrooms, summer squash, onions and green peppers.  Stir in a bit of cooked brown rice and some kind of protein: chicken or fish, or if you are vegetarian a soy protein.  Add a bit of Braggs Liquid and you have a delicious lunch.

Dinner:  Larger or smaller version of lunch

If you had a large lunch, have a small dinner or visa versa.  Create a meal with veggies, rice or noodles and some kind of protein.  Use whatever spices you like. I personally use the Indian spices as they are most satisfying and I can get more taste out of a smaller amount of food.   If you like your food spicy, add some yogurt to the meal.  If you have not had any fruit during the day, top off this meal with fresh fruit.

The right foods can be VERY comforting.

How do you change your habits? August 9, 2009

Okay, so you have made a decision to take better care of yourself and you have to change your habits. What next?  Without a plan and a goal it becomes very difficult to change our habits.  Right? Right!

I have heard many people say that it takes three weeks to change a habit. That is not very long, if you think about it.   Sometimes we are trying to change habits that we have had for many years, so three weeks is not long at all.

I find that in order to change a habit, I have to give myself a HUGE pep rally. I have to talk myself into the fact that I CAN change my habit and that it is a matter of staying motivated.

Many of us are trying to change our eating habits, exercise habits, and trying to improve the way we react to stressful situations in our lives. We read books and go to lectures to help ourselves. We become part of organized programs. And all of these things ARE helpful, but nothing can help us if we don’t stay motivated.

For me sustained motivation requires that I say daily affirmations and tell myself that I can accomplish my goals.

How do you change your habits?

Love Yourself At Your Current Weight….then start losing! July 13, 2009

Need to lose weight?

Love Yourself At Whatever Weight You Are: Too many of us dislike ourselves and put off doing things we want to do “until we lose weight.”  It can take some of us years to lose the weight we want to lose.   We are NOT our weight. The spirit within does not have a particular weight.  Each one of us has a beautiful spirit that is a spark of the Divine, no matter what we weigh.  YES, work towards being the weight you want to be, but love yourself at all times.

Carrying around extra pounds puts more stress on our knees, feet, back and our hearts.  Each one of us is a spirit living in a physical body, and we have an obligation to take care of our these temples of the soul: our physical bodies.

Following are some healthy tips for weight loss.

Diet the Old Fashioned Way and Count Calories: While there may be many fancy smancy diets around, it ultimately comes down to calories consumed and calories burned.  SparkPeople.com has a wonderful FREE website where it is easy to count calories.  Log on anywhere you can find a computer and find out how many calories you have consumed so far today so that you can make wise choices for the rest of the day.  Decide how many calories you can have each day, and do not go over that amount.

Eat 4 or 5  Smaller Meals: Three small meals and two snacks should keep any one from having hunger pangs.  Make sure that each meal is balanced with protein and carbohydrate.  Also,  eat  snacks that are healthy.  Snack on  low fat dairy products and fruits and veggies.

Avoid Take Out Food Whenever Possible: Unless you can read the nutritional values for the take out food you are about to purchase, do not buy take out.  Only buy take out when you are happy with the nutritional values: the calories, fat, salt content, and sugars.  Learn to keep food at home that is easy to carry. In other words, take your own food out with you, instead of buying take out.   You will lose pounds and save money.

Budget Treats: Decide how many times a week you will allow yourself a treat.   Develop a “treat budget” and do not spend more than you have in your budget.  All of us need a treat once in awhile.  However, it is impossible to lose weight if we have too many treats. Save the treats for times you are going to someones house for dinner or eating out.

Have Realistic Expectations: Do not expect to lose weight quickly.  Lose weight slowing and KEEP it off.  Lose five pounds and maintain that weight for a few months. Then lose another five pounds. If you have over 70  pounds to lose, get medical help.

Reminder:  Love Yourself at Your Current Weight and then love yourself as you lose each pound. You CAN do it!!!!
