Holiday time can be a GREAT time for spiritual growth, if we can learn to step back and take care of ourselves. At holiday time there can be too much to do, and therefore a great opportunity to practice self care.

Life’s challenges do not stop because it is holiday time. There are always concerns in our families about our loved ones and our pets. And if our good friends need our support at the same time, holiday time can become incredibly stressful if we let it.  This is the time to practice stepping back. This is the time to remember those three important words “Keep It Simple.”  It is not necessary to create the perfect holiday and in fact it is often impossible.

Some of us try to make up for all of the problems of the year during holiday times. We have expectations surrounding visits with our family and friends that simply cannot be met.  Life keeps happening all around us, and people still get sick and pass on,  jobs are lost by some, and all the things that can be difficult to cope with do not stop happening because it is holiday time.

Holiday time is the time to us to stay in touch with ourselves, do some spiritual reading and reflexion and pay attention to our breathing.  This is the time to monitor our stress and keep stress symptoms from building up within us.

We must remember a good holiday is a day we feel good, really good, instead of trying to pretend we feel wonderful when we are actually exhausted. If we take care of ourselves throughout this season, we can feel good on the actual holidays.

3 Ways to Reduce Stress June 24, 2010

While we are all spirits living in physical bodies, it is hard for some of us to accept that our physical bodies cannot be active all the time, as our spirits can. When we dream our spirits can travel to the far corners of the universe.  But our physical bodies and minds need rest, AND SOME OF US CANNOT STAND THAT!!!!!

They say we teach what we need to learn, so here are three ways to reduce the stress in  your life.

ACCEPTANCE:   Take a good look at yourself and accept yourself as you are. The fact that your best friend can eat ice cream all day and not gain a pound may have NOTHING to do with you.  If you did that you might feel sick all day and gain five pounds.   And the fact that your other friend can get along on four to five hours sleep a night has NOTHING to do with you if you need seven to eight hours sleep each night.  You and I have to face ourselves and accept who we are and what we need to feel relaxed and healthy.

BOUNDARIES:  If you are a nice, kind, intelligent, helpful and warm-hearted person (and of course you ARE) then everyone wants your attention and your help.  If you do not set some boundaries you will find yourself running from one activity to another and one person to another.  The result will be that you will have no time for yourself and you will become stressed out and scattered.  You and I need to take out our calendars and schedule “ME TIME” in the same way that we schedule work, family and friends appointments.

LETTING GO AND LETTING GOD: Everyday, especially as we move into the later years of our lives, we hear about people who are in trouble, people who are ill, and about people who have passed on.  If we are in the middle years of our lives we become focused on the problems of both the generation younger than us (our children) and the generation older than us (our parents).  No matter what stage of life we are in, we hear about serious problems.  While it is important to do what we can to help others in serious difficulty, we have to accept that some things are beyond our control and beyond our help.  We need to let go and let God.  At times the best thing we can do in a difficult situation is to step back and quiet ourselves. In that state of quiet, we can send our prayers to those in need.

My prayer is that each one of us can accept that while on the spiritual level there is no time, on the human level there are only so many hours in a day, and it is 24 hours we have to work with as human beings.  Let us step back and look at the ways we use our time and find ways to become more relaxed and less stressed out.

Relaxation 101 (or should it be 911) May 13, 2010

Sometimes our schedules become so overloaded, that it is time to take a course in relaxation.  While we KNOW that time off is important, sometimes we don’t  realize how crowded our calendars become.  YES, there IS an open space on the calendar, but do we take the time to look and see what other appointments are close to this open space, before booking yet another appointment? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. This is something to ponder!

Let’s take time to consider relaxation 101 before we are forced into relaxing because we have played ourselves out and become ill.   Most of us have become ill and looked back and realized that we have done ourselves in.   We have dug a hole and fallen right into it.

Of course we need to focus and accomplish our goals, but let’s set reasonable time lines, and not try to push ourselves into speeding to the finish line.  We have the rest of our lives to accomplish our goals.

We do not have to be in a race with anyone. We do not have to compete with anyone.  If we are trying too hard to be successful, let us have a good heart to heart talk with our egos, and ask the ego to consider the importance of the heart.  Let us calm down. Let us breathe deeply.  Let us relax.
