Each day I do some reading from the books by Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, founders of the Sri Aurobindo Society in Pondicherry, India.  Today I have read a passage about the soul.  In their writings, what we often refer to as the soul, they are calling “the psychic.”  The psychic is that part within each one of us that sees and understands in a manner that is far beyond what our minds are able to comprehend.  Here is a wonderful passage for you to contemplate.

“Communications from the psychic do not come in a mental form. They are not ideas or reasonings. They have their own character quite distinct from the mind, something like a feeling that comprehends itself and acts.

By it’s very nature, the psychic is calm, quiet and luminous, understanding and generous, wide and progressive. Its constant effort is to understand and progress.

The mind describes and explains. The psychic sees and understands,”

Getting Through the Tough Times September 11, 2011

You have not seen me for awhile because illness in the family has kept me from my usual writing: writing that I hope you enjoy reading, and that quite frankly I need to do in order to feel the best I can feel. Writing for me is an exploration of what is going on within, and I enjoy sharing all that with you!!!!  The patients are doing well now and so I am back at the computer keyboard.

GETTING THROUGH THE TOUGH TIMES

When people you love are ill and in physical danger you realize more than ever how fragile life is and that anything can happen to any of us at any moment.  This realization can either lead you into a life of fear, or serve as a reminder that each day is precious and must be lived to the fullest.  In other words, when faced with tough times, you and I can either take the high road or the low road.  We each have a choice.

One of the things that I find most helpful during tough times is to read spiritual literature that I love.   For me, reading the works of  Sri Aurobindo and the Mother are extremely helpful.   (They are the founders of the Sri Aurobindo Society in Pondicherry, India)

Here is a quote that I find particularly helpful:

An aimless life is always a miserable life. Every one of you should have an aim. But do not forget that on the quality of your aim will depend the quality of your life.

Your aim should be high and wide, generous and disinterested; this will make your life precious to yourself and to others.

But whatever your ideal, it cannot be perfectly realised unless you have realised perfection in yourself.

– The Mother [CWMCE, 12:3]

When I am feeling down and dealing with hardship, it is more helpful for me to pick myself up and accept the challenge.  I know that if I give into feeling sorry for myself it will be a downhill experience instead of an uphill adventure.  How can I use the word “adventure?”  That seems like a strange word to use when writing about going through very difficult times.  But when pushed into a difficult experience, I find myself facing things I have never faced before.  I have thoughts and feelings that are new.  I also feel the intense  support of the world of spirit around me and these spiritual vibrations send me into spiritual realms I have never visited before.  While I am certainly not having fun as I struggle, I do find myself on an adventure as I am in a new territory.

As the Mother in her words remind me: “do not forget that on the quality of your aim will depend the quality of your life.”  These words help me to take the high road rather than the low.   I am walking on a tight rope and the way I move each moment now is life changing. I will either keep my balance or fall. I prefer to keep my balance and find the new life that is evolving out of this adventure.

Following is a quote of The Mother, one of the founders of the Sri Aurobindo Society in Pondicherry, India. Her words help me to understand that everything we do in life can only be accomplished at the level of spiritual perfection to which we have evolved.

Inner Decisions May 30, 2011

Making decisions can be difficult, especially when we have a life changing decision to make, and our minds are taking us hither and yon.  The Mother, one of the founders of the Sri Aurobindo Society in Pondicherry, India, has some words that I find extremely helpful. This quote is from “Looking Within” Compiled Works with an Introduction by A.S. Dalal

” One may try to find out what is the truest thing to do, but it is not by a mental discussion or a mental problem that these things can be resolved. Is is in fact by an inner attitude which creates an atmosphere of harmony – progressive harmony – in which all one does will necessarily be the best thing that could be done in those particular circumstances. And the ideal would be an attitude complete enough for the action to be spontaneous, dictated by something other than an outer reason.”

Reflecting on these words helps me to calm my mind and get in touch with the inner being who knows my true path, much better than my noisy mind.

Flower Hope March 13, 2011

Hope is renewed with spring blossoms. Whatever the cold days have brought, it is over soon, and a new season of joy begins.

Be with flowers every day if you can.  Walk with the flowers outside and bring at least one fresh flower into your home.  You will see how life changes and how hopeful you become as you gaze into the glow of a fresh flower.

The Mother, one of the founders of the Sri Aurobindo Society in India, loved and was devoted to flowers.  She studied flowers and gave each flower a special spiritual name.  When you visit the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, India, you will see fresh flowers of devotion every day, beautifully arranged.

Bask in the hope of a flower and you will feel hope.

I hope that you will find this quote by Sri Aurobindo as helpful as I have. The word that jumps out at me is “power” as we all need to call on our inner power when coping with difficulty.

“The Power needed in yoga is the power to go through effort, difficulty or trouble without getting fatigued, depressed, discouraged or impatient and without breaking off the effort or giving up one’s aim or resolution.”

“People who take pleasure in writing ugly things show a great poverty of mind – it is always a sign of a poverty of mind. It is infinitely more difficult to tell a story beautiful from beginning to end than to write a story ending with a sensational event or a catastrophe. Many authors, if they had to write a story which ends happily, beautifully, would not be able to do it – they do not have enough imagination for that. Very few stories have an uplifting ending, almost all end in a failure – for a very simple reason, it is much more easy to fall than to rise. It is much more difficult to end one’s story on a note of greatness and splendour, to make one’s hero a genius seeking to transcend himself, because for that one must be a genius oneself, and this is not given to everybody.”

– The Mother [CWMCE, 4:155]

Carole Lynne comments: I love reading quotes by The Mother as she is clear and definiate about the fact that all of us have a choice as to what we create in our lives.  Whenever I feel lazy or sorry for myself in any way, all I have to do is read words by The Mother, and I am back on track. Excuse my slang, but for me she is a “tough cookie.” She is a no-nonsense, you can do it, woman.

“The Psychic Being” November 4, 2010

When Sri Aurobindo and the Mother speak of “the psychic being” they are speaking of that part of each one of us that we often call “the soul.”  As we unfold spiritually and become more in touch with the inner voice of the soul, we find that we are establishing what I call a cosmic connection to the Divine.

Following is a quote of the Mother that I enjoy alot on this topic.

“If you have within you a psychic being sufficiently awake to watch over you, to prepare your path, it can draw towards you things which help you, draw people, books, circumstances, all sorts of little coincedences which come to you as though brought by some benevolient will and give you an indication, a  help, a support to take decisions and turn you in the right direction.”

We Are Our Destiny October 4, 2010

Sometimes we like to blame fate, destiny and just about anything else we can find to blame when we are not happy with actions we have taken. Here is a quote by the Mother, one of the two founders of the Sri Aurobindo Society. These words are very helpful!!!

“There are mistakes… one knows they are mistakes, but still it is as though one were pushed into making them. Then?
Pushed by what? Ah, this is exactly what happens! It is the lower nature, the instincts of the subconscient  which govern you and make you do things you should not do. And so it is a choice between your will and accepting submission. There is always a moment when one can decide.
. . .And it is a choice between weak submission and a controlling will. And if the will is clear, if it is based on truth, if truly it obeys the truth and is clear, it always has the power to refuse the wrong movement. It is an excuse you give yourself when you say, “I could not.” It is not true. It is that truly you have not wanted it in the right way. For there is always the choice between saying “yes” and saying “no”. But one chooses to be weak and later gives oneself this excuse, saying, “It is not my fault; it was stronger than I.” It is your fault if the thing was stronger than you. Because you are not these impulses, you are a conscious soul and an intelligent will, and your duty is to see that this is what governs you and not the impulses from below.”
