Guilt After a Passing November 5, 2009

“I was not there when my loved one passed”

While we would all like to be by the side of our loved one at the time of passing, it is not always possible. One of the hardest things to cope with after the passing of a loved one, is guilt. Not everyone feels guilt, but many do. As a psychic medium, I work with many people who are in deep grief and burdened with guilt.  One of the things people feel guilty about, is not being with their loved one at the moment of passing.

I have talked with a woman who stayed with her loved one in the hospital 24/7, wanting to be with her loved one at the moment of passing.  Then when she left the hospital bed for two minutes to go to the rest room, the loved one passed into eternal life.  She was devastated and asks me “why did this happen?”  She wants to know if her loved one wanted to pass alone to spare her the grief, or was her loved one angry at her?”   All kinds of thoughts run through her mind over and over again as she tries to understand why her loved one did not wait for her to come back into the room before passing.

I cannot prove why a human being passes at a particular moment.  It could be for very physical reasons, and it could be that the spirit of the human being makes a choice about when to pass.  Many believe that there is a contract between the soul of the person and God and that the moment of death is in God’s hands.   My experiences as a psychic medium have brought me to the conclusion that when the spirit of a human being passes into eternal life, the shutdown of the body and the mind do not always coincide with the moment the spirit leaves the physical body and makes the transition into eternal life.  I sense that the spirits within many who are getting ready to pass on are beginning to leave their physical bodies long before the medical moment of physical death.  For instance the spirits of people who are in comas may have left their bodies, but are still in the hospital room, trying to comfort their loved ones who are sitting by the bedside crying.

What I do know is that it is not always possible to be with a loved one at the moment of physical death. It IS possible to be with the spirit of your loved one, before, during and after the passing.

Remember that you can be with the spirit of your loved one at all times, and so if you are not able to be with your loved one at the moment of physical passing, you can still be with the spirit, even though you may not be at the physical side of your loved one.  Place thoughts of your loved one in your consciousness and speak within your mind to your loved one.  Or you may prefer to sing to your loved one as the vibrations of sound, whether sung out loud or simply “played with in the mind” are powerful and healing to the spirit of your loved one. And you do not have to be a good singer to send wonderful vibrations of love through sound.

When my father, whom I was very close to during his lifetime, passed into spirit, I was on the other side of the country.  I was devastated, but I felt in touch with his spirit. In fact, I woke in the middle of the night and felt that he was passing. It was within the next hour that I received the news from family members who were with him.   Many of my clients have had this same kind of experience.

It is never too late to communicate with the spirit of your loved one.

If you were not with your loved one at the time of passing, or if you did not feel in touch with the spirit of your loved one at that time, it is never too late to communicate your love.  Just close your eyes and say a prayer and then talk to your loved one out loud or within your mind.   I have had great proof in readings, that our loved ones in eternal life hear us even if they have passed on many years ago.  I do not mean to insinuate that we can talk to them as if we were on a phone.  But I know that thoughts are vibrations and that they can travel between the realms of our conscious earth life and the eternal life that many of us call “the spirit world” or “heaven.”

If you feel guilt after the passing of a loved one, know that are in the company of many who also feel guilt. It is all part of the grieving process.  Try to focus on all the good things that you have done, and know that your loved one is not in eternal life, making a list of all the things  you did that were not perfect.  I have never had a communication with any spirit who came through in a reading with messages about all the imperfections of my client. In fact it is just the opposite. Those in spirit seem to have gained a greater understanding of life, and they are usually most appreciative for all that we have done for them and the love that we have given them and are continuing to give through our prayers for them, and through keeping their memories alive with the family.

I am having a wonderful experience working with a book that I channeled from the world of spirit. It is equally satisfying to work with students as they read this book.  Following is an excerpt:

“I believe in you

You know what you need

While others can be helpful and you need their guidance, it is your body, mind and spirit that ultimately know what you need.

Trust yourself

Cultivate a deep friendship with your inner wisdom

Know that you have a Higher Self that is part of All Divine Wisdom”

heart and sound frontLast night a  friend in his seventies, trying to cope with the troubles and the passing of too many close friends, asked me “What is the meaning of all this? I am not sure I see the point of life.”

As we get older and many family and friends are becoming ill and eventually passing into eternal life, it becomes hard to accept and it becomes easy to question the meaning of life.

I turned to my friend and said “We are here to enjoy each day as much as possible, and we have a whole world to try to save, so we better get busy.”  At this point in life, we need to be doing things that help others.  We must do this for ourselves. While it may look like we are helping others, it is really ourselves that we are helping.  As we grow older it is time for us to understand that WE ARE ALL ONE.  As we help others, we merge with THE ONE.

Of course the complications of our own lives keep us busy, but there is always some time that can be used to help others in the family, community and world.

This morning I picked up a little book of inspiration by Sri Aurobindo, one of the founders of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry, India.  I asked the Divine to take me to a quote that would have meaning for me this morning, and here is the quote that appeared to me as I opened this small book:

“The soul- a spark of the Divine; to grow in flame towards the Divine in its true life and its very reason for existence.”

As I read these words, what comes to me is that the reason for existence, is to find the spark of the Divine within.  The question that was brought up the evening before, was answered.  As we open ourselves to the light of Divine

Consciousness, we find our true selves. We are able to cope with life, help ourselves, help others, and evolve in our consciousness, so that when the day comes when it is time to make a transition to eternal life, we are prepared.

Mind must be tamed if we want inner peace. The hours and hours spent analyzing current situations, can become a waste of time. Sometimes, we need to make the best decision we can at the moment and then get on with life.

Of course there are challenges in life which require  that we take our time making decisions.  But in many cases we go around in circles as we make decisions, when that is not necessary.

It is sad the way many of us spend our lives feeling stressed and worried.

Feeling the love of the Divine and having faith in the future is the best path to inner peace.

Many Lives within One August 27, 2009

During a single life, we lead many lives

Sometimes it feels as if we are dying and being reborn within the same life

When life brings its abrupt shocks and sadness, like a snake we shed our skin

We have completed a cycle and we never again be who we have been

A part of us dies as the skin is shed and the new skin is like that of the new born baby: tender and vulnerable

It is in these times that we need the courage to move ahead and see what our new life will bring

Holding on to what was is impossible as it has vanished

Like the new born, we must learn to sit, learn to crawl, and then finally be on our feet running around at top speed

Discovery and intrigue must carry us through as we find out who we are in our new life

Worry: Toss It August 26, 2009

” Worry: Toss It”  Those words sound trite and impossible. How in the world are we able to toss worry, especially when we are surrounded by personal problems and are surrounded by headlines on TV and on the Internet, designed to get our attention FAST as they are all about problems.

The only way to “toss” worry is to practice mindfulness and be aware of each moment.  The real truth is that our problems do not invade every moment of our lives, unless we work hard to make sure they do so.  If you look outside and see a beautiful bird and really allow yourself to focus on the bird and hear its lovely song, your problems will not consume that moment. If you have a grandchild who jumps into your lap and nearly knocks you off your chair, you can enjoy the laughter and your worries will not consume that moment unless you make sure to worry as you laugh.

Tossing worry does not mean that we do not confront our problems and take whatever steps we need to take to pay our bills, take care of our health, and be of service to members of our family who have serious health problems.  To toss worry means to take practical actions to make our lives more manageable and then the rest of the time, stop worrying and have a good time!

heart and sound front

Music is a great healer.   I still sing along with the chants on the Heart and Sound CD and read the affirmations and prayers when I need to feel uplifted or motivated.

For instance, when I need to make decisions and feel overwhelmed with too many opinions from other, well meaning, but occasionally annoying people, I use the following affirmation.

“While I appreciate the opinions of others, I am going to make my own decisions about how to put my talents out into the world.”

I also sing the chant called “Inspiration” as this helps me to connect with my higher self as I make decisions about my life.

“As I open myself to inspiration, inspiration flows to me, through me, back to the Source.”

As I sing this chant, I am acknowledging that there is a part of each one of us that connects to Divine Consciouness: the Source of all that exists.

LOVE this book by John Kabat-Zinn August 21, 2009

I picked up a copy of Letting Everything Become Your Teacher by John Kabat-Zinn.  One of the things this great author points out is that the map is not the journey. In other words, a map may be a drawing or plan of places you want to go, but you have to actually take the journey to go to these places on the map.  This seems obvious, but often this simple truth teases us and allows us to rationalize.

For instance, it feels good to make plans and even write down a commitment to meditate each day, or to exercise,  or to eat a healthy diet.  But the list of things we want to do for ourselves, is only a list.  Unless we take the action and actually meditate, do the exercise, and eat healthy meals, then absolutely nothing has happened except that a list has been made. Sometimes we feel great when we make our “to do” lists of items that will improve our lives and if we are not careful those good feelings may get in our way of taking the actions on the list.

Get this book.  It is a small and inexpensive book of excerpts from Full Catastrophe Living.  This is a book I am going to read and re-read. It is one of those books I want in the glove compartment of my car in case I want to read it between errands.

Rising Above Our Personalities August 19, 2009

Cosmic_Connection Front Cover

We are spirits living within physical bodies.  Our minds, our thoughts and all the actions of our personality are part of our human existence. Within this material realm, we have many joys, many struggles, many opinions, many goals that we reach and many failures.  All of this is part of human life.

Within each one of us is a spark of Divine Consciousness, and the connection to the Divine is not always apparent to the personality level of an individual.  When you or I are deep in the depths of our personal emotional lives, we are not always aware of the spark of Divinity within.  It is that spark of Divine Consciousness within that lives on eternally. And it is that spark that we must turn to for strength in times of stress or sorrow.

Some might use the word God, Infinite Spirit or Great Spirit. From this author’s perspective WE ARE ALL ONE, and so each individual is a Divine spark of the whole. As WE ARE ALL ONE, whatever happens in life to each one of us individually, happens on a higher level to all of us.   It is not easy to see how we are all connected when we look at life from an individual perspective, but as we rise above our personalities we see reality from a different plane of existence. In this higher plane, WE ARE ALL ONE.

On the individual material level, we do not all have the same concepts, values and beliefs about life.  We fight wars over our differences.  From the level of Divine Consciousness, there are no differences and there is an understanding that is far beyond what any human beings can express or understand fully.  Perhaps some great human beings receive revelations and some understandings of the Infinite, but for most of us on the spiritual path, it will be our lifetime journey to understand more about the true nature of Divine reality, one small step at a time.  However long it takes to understand, the journey is worth it, as each time we focus on the spark with us that is Divine, we receive the blessings of this experience.
