Season of Giving December 23, 2009

This is the season of giving and the time for us to make a commitment to give all the time, not just at the holidays.  For those of us who are comfortable enough in our life styles to be able to buy presents for others, decorate our houses and to do all the things we do at holiday time: this is a time for us to make a greater commitment to giving to those in the world who have no houses, or who live in huts covered with straw.  Of course we deserve to have a good holiday, but we must use this time to realize that the wealth of the world is not shared enough. There are too many people whose children do not have enough to eat, schools to go to, medical care, and clean clothing to wear.

Sometimes it is painful to think about the needy. It is easier for each one of us to give our small donations and then feel that we have done our part.  It is only fair to say, that for some of us, small donations are all that we can afford. However, many who read these words have enough wealth to share if they are willing to give up some of the expensive items they usually enjoy.  Many are wealthy enough to leave money to their children, live well themselves, and still give a good proportion of their wealth to those who have nothing.  But it may mean getting over habits such as buying the most expensive handbags and shoes, and staying in the most expensive hotels. It may mean seeing a trinket in a store that costs a couple hundred dollars, and realizing in that moment, that $200 USD in some countries would feed a child for a year or so.  Do we really NEED that extra trinket when a child somewhere is starving?  If each one of us, no matter what our financial situation, gave up just a little bit more to charity, we might see great results as we help the needy.

If you are interested in giving to the needy, there are a number of projects that I have investigated and I will be happy to share information with you.

This cute little girl is not thrilled about having her picture taken, but she is happy with the food she is receiving each month from BabiesNeedFood.  As part of this program she receives formula each month and is also seen by our doctor.  This child did smile at me and play after the “photo op” was over!

If you can visit our website and learn more about us. Perhaps you will find a way to contribute whatever you can.  Our charity is family run, and so ALL the money collected goes to feed children in Southern India who are part of our program.  The management of the charity is all done by family members and there are no salaries paid.  Every time we raise $125 we can put a new baby in our program until that child reaches the age of two.   Visit www.babiesneedfood.org

NEED More Stuff? December 6, 2009

Ok, so here we are again, about to go out and buy ourselves and others alot of things that we and they do not really need.  Well, that’s not fair, as many of us DO need more stuff, but these words are addressed to those of us, including myself, who do not need to have alot more things to clog up our closets and become “dustables” in our houses.  Of course if you like to dust, be my guest. If you like the air you breathe to be sprinkled liberally with dust, then clog up your house.  If you find it easier to find something to wear by going to the store, than digging through your overly packed closet be my guest.  OR you and I have another alternative: GIVE TO THE NEEDY.

If you have loved ones who have everything, consider giving to a charity in their name.  You can find a beautiful gift card and let your loved one know about the donation.  Along with your gift card for our loved one, give a simple inexpensive and consumable gift (such as flowers or a special jar of jam) to add your own personal touch.

The holidays are a time of good will, and you can help many people in need by making this a time to go through your house and give everything you do not need to the Salvation Army or another charity organization near you. We will feel better when the holidays are over if we have helped the needy.  AND we can KEEP giving throughout the year.

Superficial Happiness or Lasting? June 9, 2009

In today’s world where we are so aware of what is happening with people all over the planet, it is hard to be blissfully happy in our own little world, unless we want to shut out all news from those around the globe. Those of us who have been fortunate enough to travel around the world, or even to less fortunate neighborhoods in our own country, know that serious poverty exists. When we see pictures of starving children on television, we know that those children are real and that the flies that buzz around them are real.

How happy can one be sitting on the beach drinking an iced cafe latte, knowing that others are starving? While facing this question does not bring immediate happiness, facing and dealing with the problems of the world will ultimately bring a real spiritual happiness, which is the core of bliss.   The superficial happiness that comes when we can buy a bigger house or a diamond ring, is not a lasting happiness.  As we evolve into higher states of consciousness and begin to give more of what we have to others, then we can find a lasting happiness.

Let us all pray that we can take an honest look at our world and find ways to help others through our prayers and through donations of money, goods and time.  As we help others, we help ourselves. We evolve into a better world where everyone can benefit from the joys life offers.  It is often the poor who give to the poor, as they know what it is like to be in need of food, housing and clothing.  Those of us who are not in poverty need to imagine what it would be like to be living on the street, trying to get enough food for each day.

As we raise our spiritual consciousness, we come to understand that We Are All One.  None of us are separate, and that child across the world who is staving, is part of us.  When we go to sleep at night, in the background of our consciousness we see that truth and know that all of us are connected.  Let us learn to see the truth about the world when we are in the waking state, so that we can reach out more to help those in need.  Then we will find lasting happiness.

Do you have a PERSONAL ENERGY CRISIS? May 12, 2009

We read about the worldwide energy crisis and we are all beginning to understand that we need to conserve energy and find new energy sources.  That being probably the most important issue our planet has to face, let us for the moment start by looking within ourselves to see if we have our own PERSONAL ENERGY CRISIS.

This morning as I open up to the guidance within, I hear that I must look at my own personal energy crisis. What does that mean? I need to look within to see what I am allowing in my life to cause “energy leaks.”  But what is an energy leak? I perceive an energy leak to be an expenditure of energy on something that it should not be spent on, in the same way that if oil leaks from my car onto the floor of my garage, the oil is not being used for the right purpose.

If I allow people to upset me and “spend”  alot of energy on my upset, then that same energy is not available to do something more worthwhile during my day.  If I allow myself to get involved in useless gossip, then I am spending energy that might otherwise be spent on a more worthwhile activity.

If I am going to be able to help myself and others, I need to avoid energy leaks.

If all of us could look within and ask ourselves if we are using our personal energy in the best way, many of us would discover that we need to be more discerning.  It is only as we learn to use our energy in the best ways, that we will have the energy we need to help our world, which still has many problems.   We still need to solve the problems of war, hunger and poverty. We still need to solve the problems of abuse in our world.  None of us can solve all those problems alone, but if each one of us learned how to make better choices in the ways we use our energy, we would each have time to devote ourselves to a project that would be helpful to the world.

We Are All Mother’s of the Earth Let Us Not Escape into Cyberspace May 8, 2009

As we approach Mother’s day, it is a day that we think about caring for others. That is what a mother must do for her children.  On Mother’s day let us all find a way to find the mother instinct within. Every woman and man has the instinct of a parent.

As we find ourselves so comfortable in “cyberspace” I sometimes wonder if we are going more inward into technology, because we fear that being outside will ultimately not be safe. Sometimes I wonder if children are so involved in computers and in cyberspace because they know that the new world will not be as safe outside as it has been for generations past. When I have these feelings, I hope I am wrong.

I pray that we can seriously once again learn to take care of the earth, and all be mothers to the earth.

How to Help the Helpless April 28, 2009

It is very important and yet difficult to help those who are not able to help themselves. First of all, we need to understand in the specific case of a helpless person, what is the best kind of help to be given.

If there are a group of people who are starving, then the answer may be to give money to a reputable organization that can use the funds to purchase food for the hungry. If there are people who are homeless, unless one can provide a home (which many of us cannot or do not feel comfortable offering) then the best way to help might be to either volunteer time to an organization for the homeless, or give funds to such an organization.  Sometimes the best way to help the helpless is through an organization dedicated to helping a particular group of people.

When someone we know personally needs help, such as a family member of close friend, then we need to find out from that person what will be most helpful.  If our loved one is recovering from  surgery would it be helpful to bring food? If so, we need to find out what kind of food the person is advised and likes to eat, or our food will simply take up room in the refrigerator and never be eaten.  If the person needs to have someone walk the dog or feed the cat, then we need to know if we can do that j0b, or if someone else needs to help in that way.   If the person needs shopping done, perhaps that is the thing to do.   When getting a list of the person’s needs, it is important to organize a group of family or friends so that as large a number of people as possible share in the helping activities.  As one person, it becomes too difficult to keep up with all of ones own responsibilities as well as the responsibilities of a loved one who for the moment, cannot do their own chores.   Sometimes the best way to help a loved one in need is to organize a group of “helpers.”

It becomes harder to know how to help a helpless person who really could help themselves if he or she was motivated to do so.  We all know people who through lack of courage, moral stamina and determination, bring themselves into a place of despair that they could get themselves out of.  From my point of view, these people need a spiritual lift into an energy of hope. They need a psychological understanding that they are responsible for themselves.  In many of these cases, we advice people to seek medical help or to see a therapist. When the person refuses, it becomes very difficult to know how to help a person who will not help themselves.   I sometimes reach a point where my only choice is to pray for a person in such despair, as my phone calls and visits do not seem to provide much help. In these cases, I also have to put a limit on the number of phone calls and visits I make, because ultimately I can also become depressed and frustrated.  However, I do not wish to stop communication, but must set limits.  Sometimes we must set limits with people who could help themselves but do not.

Helping others is an important part of the spiritual path for each one of us.  It is difficult to make time to help others and often difficult to share our money. But unless we are starving ourselves and unable to take care of ourselves, we must make both time and money, within our own limits,  available for those in need.

Earth Day Every Day April 21, 2009

As we approach Earth Day on April 22, we need to remember that Earth Day must be an Every Day event in our lives.  We can no longer sit back and blame “THEM”  for using up the earths resources, as it is “US.”  There is no “THEM” to blame.

It is only through spiritual unfoldment and opening to the wider aspects of our consciousness that we are likely to make the huge changes that we need to make on this planet. In order for us to change, we have to think less about our personal desires and more about what is good for the world as a whole.   Coming to this state of mind is very difficult and without spiritual growth, we will only make minor changes in our lives.

Today and every day each one of us must ask ourselves “What can I do today to help the world? What can I do to reduce the carbon-footprint on this earth?  What can I do to help people who do not have enough to eat? What can I do to help our world learn to find solutions to disagreements?

We need to evolve into human beings that find war, poverty and pollution unthinkable. This will only come as we evolve spiritually.

Wonderful time on “X” Zone Radio with Rob McConnell April 15, 2009

Hi Friends,

Yesterday I got a last minute call from my publisher: “Can you be on Rob McConnell’s show at eleven tonight?”  “ELEVEN at night” I screamed to myself.  The publisher continued:” They want you to talk about your new book.”  “Of course,”  I said “I will do it.”

I am so eager to have the opportunity to speak about Cosmic Connection: Messages for a Better World because I so deeply believe in the message spirit brings to us through the writings published in this book.

As I got ready to go on the show by telephone from my home office in Newton, I was reminded of the early days of radio when my Dad owned a small radio station in Ventura, California: KVEN.   As a six year old I was on the radio on Saturdays playing kids records for any kids who would listen. Now here I was on April 14th, 2009: the anniversary of my Dad’s passing to spirit, on the radio again talking about a book that lets us know what the spirit world believes we need to do.  I have been feeling the presence of my Dad’s spirit alot lately, and hopefully his spirit was aware of the show last night where Rob McConnell and I talked for an hour about the importance of each human being on this planet recognizing that we are all connected.

We can no longer be “out for ourselves.”  The old phrase “each man for himself” is history!  We have to all be out for each other.

By the way, Rob McConnell is an excellent host and I thoroughly enjoyed talking with him. Google his name or “X” Zone Radio to find out more about the show and read the list of who will be interviewed each week.
