Second post by Carole Lynne on listening to the body.

How can we tell the difference between feeling lazy and an inner sense that today we must rest? When we do not feel like doing our exercise should we push ourselves because we assume that we are lazy, or should we skip our exercise on a particular day?

These are hard questions to answer.  In order to find the answers we must learn to tell the difference between the many different voices that speak within us.  The voice of laziness will try to distract us from all the things we want to do in order to take good care of ourselves. The voice of laziness would have us camped out on the sofa with a bag of chips.  The voice of inner wisdom, that spark in each one of us that is cosmically connected to Divine Consciousness, knows when we need to be active and when we need to take an occasional day off, even if it is in front of the TV with a bag of chips!

One of the best reasons for us to work on our spiritual development is that we learn how to listen to ourselves, and feel the difference between the vibrations of the many different voices.   With practice one can feel the difference in the energy of the voice of laziness and the voice of inner wisdom.

In my own spiritual development, I have learned a great deal by reading the works of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother, founders of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and the Sri Aurobindo Society in Pondicherry India.  Following is a quote by the Mother about listening to the body.

“The body left to itself knows very well what it can and cannot do. Not only that but even a thing that one can do and does usually, if one day you feel a sort of repulsion, as if you were shrinking back, you must definitely not do it; it is an indication that for some reason or other – a purely material reason of a disorder in the functioning of the body you are not fit to do the thing at that time.”  Quote from Health and Healing in Yoga, published by the Sri Aurobindo Ashram.

We must listen to the body. While we can listen with our intellect, we can only pick up so many “stations” within our consciousness.  There are bands of understanding that we simply cannot hear. As we learn to listen with the heart and soul,  the universe opens up to us and we can hear the wisdom of Divine Consciousness.
