Let us each listen to our own tone of voice as we speak to others. When we speak, words are carried to the ears of those we speak to, but what is even more important than the words we say, is the energetic vibration that fills those words. As we speak we may be sending either love, irritation, anger or sadness to the person spoken to. We can fully understand what we are sending to others by listening to the tone of voice we are sending at each moment.
“He Olina eo Ka Ke Aloha” This says “Joy is in the voice of love” and is a quote from a wonderful little book called “A Little Book of Aloha” by Renata Provenzano. Renata, a Holland born international journalist and traveler, is fascinated by the Hawaiian Islands. She has collected and shares with us many of the Hawaiian Proverbs that she finds beautiful and helpful.
I am also deeply fascinated by Hawaii, having been there many times, as my parents lived there most of my adult life. Hawaii became “home” to me and I have learned a great deal by listening to and learning to sing some of the Hawaiian songs. The great thing about the Hawaiian language is that it is mostly made up of vowel sounds. I know from being a singer and voice teacher for over thirty years, that it is the vowel sounds that carry the tone, whether we are speaking or singing. Just try to speak or sing a consonant without a vowel attached to it and you will understand the full implications.
Tone of voice is as important as touch. When we speak with the sound of joy and love in our voices , we bring healing and comfort to those who listen to us. When we speak with the sound of bitterness, aloofness, or anger in our voices, we make those listening feel uncomfortable, sad and sometimes scared. When we touch, those we touch can either receive healing or aloof or negative feelings. Ever have someone shake your hand and although this was meant to be a friendly gesture, you felt cold and uncomfortable?
Let us listen to our voices and discover how we are truly communicating with others.

In Hawaii one can feel the Spirit of Aloha everywhere: in the land, in the smiles of the people, and in the friendly manner of the people. Of course there are times when people get mad and experience all the negative emotions people experience everywhere. But on the whole, you will find a friendlier more caring group of people than you may find elsewhere!
There is a small book called “A Little Book of Aloha.” One of the sayings in this book is “UA OLA LOKO I KE ALOHA” and it means “Love Gives Life Within.”
How true these words are. When we feel love we feel alive and well. When we feel anger, we do not feel good. Love within creates harmony within.

Peace Within March 11, 2011

As I walked around the beautiful spiritual sites in Thailand, I felt peaceful. When I came home and sat with my spiritual circle, I felt the same peace.
It is wonderful and a privilege to travel to spiritual sites around the world. It is also not necessary to do so to find peace within.
Peace within becomes available to each one of us as we discover the cosmic connection within. This connection provides access to Divine consciousness. One can travel around the world and never experience Divine consciousness. One only needs to go within and the Divine Spark is there.

I have been watching a series of shows called “Story of India” written, produced and narrated by Michael Woods. If you get a chance, watch it as it is an incredible learning experience. I have to admit that when I was a kid in highschool, my mind was wandering a lot of the time and I did not absorb the knowledge of history that I would have liked to have learned as a kid. Now with this series, I am taken back to the ancient civilizations of the world, and have the opportunity in a series of exciting videos, to learn what I did not learn long ago.
Have to admit I get bored reading many history books. I have friends who are in love with history books, but find that I am captivated by film. I can learn so much more that way.
Check out Story of India.

FOOD AS AN OFFERING TO THE DIVINE WITHIN August 26, 2010

Many of us eat too much. We are filled with desires and we consume more than our bodies require. We also eat because we are happy, because we are sad, lonely, bored etc. etc. We have all kinds of excuses for eating too much.
Here is a beautiful quote by a woman who became known as the Mother. She is one of the founders of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Society, in Pondicherry, India,
“Physically, we depend on food to live – unfortunately. For with food, we daily and constantly take in a formidable amount of inconscience, of tamas, heaviness, stupidity. One can’t do otherwise – unless constantly, without a break, we remain completely aware and, as soon as an element is introduced into the body, we immediately work upon it to extract from it only the light and reject all that may darken our consciousness. This is the origin and rational explanation of the religious practice of consecrating one’s food to God before taking it. When eating one aspires that this food may not be taken for the little human ego but as an offering to the divine consciousness within oneself. In all yogas, all religions, this is encouraged. This is the origin of that practice, of contacting the consciousness behind, precisely to diminish as much as possible the absorption of an inconscience which increases daily, constantly, without one’s being away of it.”

A Weather Attitude Adjustment July 19, 2010

Suffering with the summer humidity? Do you need a weather attitude adjustment?
Having lived in many parts of the US and traveled in Europe and Asia, one thing is for sure: no matter where people live they complain about the weather. Of course when a terrible storm is on the horizon it is reasonable to take precautions and take the weather seriously. But most of the time, we complain about the weather because it is too cold, too hot, too humid, two windy or too rainy. When it is not raining, we complain about the need for rain, and when it does rain we complain about how our special outdoors event had to be moved inside. Hopefully we can laugh at ourselves and see what complainers we are at times, and how we need an attitude adjustment when it comes to the weather.
We bond with each other as we complain about the weather. It is easier to talk about the rain or the humidity than it is to talk about what the weather really means. As we experience the different cycles of the weather we come to understand that nature is more powerful than we are, and with all our advances in civilization, the weather is not something we can control.
Perhaps it is more important to be grateful for the weather as it is a sign that we are here living on this planet, able to experience the weather. Perhaps each time the weather changes, we could use the change as a moment to be grateful for the planet we live on and reflect on ways to encourage the survival of civilization on our planet.

88 year old role model February 2, 2010

This morning I had the opportunity to be part of a group that met for breakfast, and on my left sat an 88 year old man who has the excitment of a teen ager as he looks forward to the things he is going to do. He continues to exercise, write books, take pictures, and socialize with his friends. He is a great companion to his partner, and you can tell that she greatly benefits from being in his presence.
The conversation at the breakfast table was one of those rare conversations where the energy around everyone at the table seemed to sparkle with radiance.
It is amazing how the spirit of one person can sometimes touch others so deeply. Being in this man’s presence is transforming. And if I told him that, he would blush and probably think I have greatly exaggerated.
This man does not call himself a philosopher or a spiritual teacher, but he is.
I want to be like him as I grow old. He is an incredible role model.

This cute little girl is not thrilled about having her picture taken, but she is happy with the food she is receiving each month from BabiesNeedFood. As part of this program she receives formula each month and is also seen by our doctor. This child did smile at me and play after the “photo op” was over!
If you can visit our website and learn more about us. Perhaps you will find a way to contribute whatever you can. Our charity is family run, and so ALL the money collected goes to feed children in Southern India who are part of our program. The management of the charity is all done by family members and there are no salaries paid. Every time we raise $125 we can put a new baby in our program until that child reaches the age of two.
