Twas the day after Christmas and all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse

The presents were strewn here and there: everywhere

The people were stuck to the sofas and chairs

5 Ways to Cope with Holiday Grief

By Carole Lynne Author of Cosmic Connection: Messages for a Better World

Behind our holiday smiles and good wishes, many of us carry feelings of deep grief. So how can we have a wonderful holiday if we are experiencing sorrow? Each one of us can choose to have a good holiday or bury ourselves in our troubles.

Following are suggestions for transforming your grief during the holiday season.

Realize that you are in charge and can make the best choices about how to cope with your grief. If you are in grief because of the passing of a loved one, decide whether you will be happier being with family on the holiday or being alone with thoughts of your loved one. Know that it is your decision and do not let others orchestrate your life with activities they think will make you happy. You are in grief and that is enough to cope with. This is not a time for you to carry the extra burden of pleasing others. If you choose to be with people, have as nice a time as you can by asking questions about their lives. As you listen, you will get your mind off yourself and this may bring some much needed relief. If you choose to be alone, then pamper yourself with a cuddly blanket and your favorite snacks. Spend the time focusing on memories of your loved one and sending prayers of gratitude for the time you had together.

Practice unconditional love. If you are in grief because you are not getting along with members of your family or members of your family are not getting along with each other, this is a time to rise above your everyday human mind into a higher state of Divine Consciousness where you can see the Light of unconditional love. While the voice of your ego gossips about members of your family, allow the voice of your inner wisdom to kindly ask your ego to calm down. While the ego-voice makes you feel sorry for yourself or irritated with the way you are being treated, allow the voice of inner wisdom to see beyond petty circumstances. Let Divine love shine through you and not only will you feel better, but you may notice that as others feel the presence of Divine love, they will also calm down, without knowing why.

Find a family if you do not have a family. While many feel they have too many relatives, there are those among us who have no family as all of their loved ones have passed into eternal life. There are also those who are separated from their families by distance or emotional battles. If you want to celebrate the holidays with family and do not have a family, then find one. You are a member of the human family, and there are millions of people who need your love. Volunteer your time on the holiday and serve meals in a community soup kitchen, hold and sing to babies in an orphanage. Make bags of sandwiches and hand them out to homeless people sleeping in train stations. As you find a way to give to others, you will receive the special rewards that giving always brings. Your heart will fill with gladness.

Remember that the holiday is just a day, and tomorrow will be another day. Do you suspect we get just a tiny bit carried away with holiday expectations? We want the holidays to be a time of wonder and glory. We want relationships to be perfect and special moments to be had by all. And sometimes our expectations are met and sometimes not. Tone down your expectations. Get rid of unrealistic fantasies about yourself and your loved ones. You will have a much better time if you are not expecting all your problems to be solved because it is a holiday.

Take special care of yourself if you are in grief on a holiday. Think about what activities make you feel happiest. Do you feel good when you exercise? Do you like to play the piano? Or is cooking one of your most enjoyable activities? Especially if you are in grief, you must include activities that make you feel good this holiday season. Take care of your body, especially if you are in grief. This is not the time to eat and drink things that you know do not agree with you. You really do not want to have to cope with the extra stress of indigestion and heartburn. Pamper your body by eating and drinking the foods and beverages that bring feelings of calm and well-being. YOU are a special person. Treat yourself well. Cry if you need to and reach out to others if that will be helpful.

Remember you are in charge and you are a strong person. You can cope with grief and find happiness. Life is never one thing or the other. Life is a mixture of many emotional textures that all weave the patterns of our human experience.

Season of Giving December 23, 2009

This is the season of giving and the time for us to make a commitment to give all the time, not just at the holidays.  For those of us who are comfortable enough in our life styles to be able to buy presents for others, decorate our houses and to do all the things we do at holiday time: this is a time for us to make a greater commitment to giving to those in the world who have no houses, or who live in huts covered with straw.  Of course we deserve to have a good holiday, but we must use this time to realize that the wealth of the world is not shared enough. There are too many people whose children do not have enough to eat, schools to go to, medical care, and clean clothing to wear.

Sometimes it is painful to think about the needy. It is easier for each one of us to give our small donations and then feel that we have done our part.  It is only fair to say, that for some of us, small donations are all that we can afford. However, many who read these words have enough wealth to share if they are willing to give up some of the expensive items they usually enjoy.  Many are wealthy enough to leave money to their children, live well themselves, and still give a good proportion of their wealth to those who have nothing.  But it may mean getting over habits such as buying the most expensive handbags and shoes, and staying in the most expensive hotels. It may mean seeing a trinket in a store that costs a couple hundred dollars, and realizing in that moment, that $200 USD in some countries would feed a child for a year or so.  Do we really NEED that extra trinket when a child somewhere is starving?  If each one of us, no matter what our financial situation, gave up just a little bit more to charity, we might see great results as we help the needy.

If you are interested in giving to the needy, there are a number of projects that I have investigated and I will be happy to share information with you.

Our Own Eyes December 21, 2009

Can we take a deep look? The last month of the year is always an opportunity to look both backwards and forewards.  What kind of a year are we ending, and what kind of a year do we want to help materialize as we begin the new year?

Does it not become all too easy to blame every one and everything for anything that went wrong? It is just amazing how much trouble the global “THEY” causes.

Although it is very difficult for many of us, including myself, to take an honest look into our own eyes, when we are able to do so we are on the path of empowerment. When we can see what we have created, both positive and negative, we are in a position to move forward with an understanding of where we have been. This leads to a much greater understanding of where we want to go AND how to get there. AS we can see our mistakes of the past, there is greater chance that we will not repeat them. And when we acknowledge in ourselves, our best talents, we can move forward into the new year ready to use these talents again and again to achieve our goals.

Let us each get ourselves a hand mirror and look into it often.

I subscribe to Lisa Coffey’s daily message. Here is one that I find very helpful.

Decision “Choice of attention – is to the inner life what choice of action is to the outer. In both cases, a man is responsible for his choice and must accept the consequences, whatever they may be.” -W.H. Auden

We decide where we put our attention, and wherever we put our attention grows, and becomes more important in our lives. We decide how to spend our days, what to read, where to go, what to say and with whom to talk. All of that has some effect on our inner life. We can feel it; we can see the results. -Lissa Coffey

This cute little girl is not thrilled about having her picture taken, but she is happy with the food she is receiving each month from BabiesNeedFood.  As part of this program she receives formula each month and is also seen by our doctor.  This child did smile at me and play after the “photo op” was over!

If you can visit our website and learn more about us. Perhaps you will find a way to contribute whatever you can.  Our charity is family run, and so ALL the money collected goes to feed children in Southern India who are part of our program.  The management of the charity is all done by family members and there are no salaries paid.  Every time we raise $125 we can put a new baby in our program until that child reaches the age of two.   Visit www.babiesneedfood.org

I Prayed and Nothing Happened December 12, 2009

I love to visit the website www.sriaurobindosociety.org.in         For guidance, there is a link on the home page.  Click on this link and you will come to the guidance page, where you can ask a question in your mind, and then click for an answer.  The answers that come to me are always so relevant.

This morning when I went to the site I asked, “What quote do I need to share with readers of my blog,”  and this quote by the Mother, one of the founders of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, came up:

“Aspiration in everyone, no matter who it is, has the same power. But the effect of this aspiration is different. For aspiration is aspiration: if you have aspiration, in itself it has a power. Only, this aspiration calls down an answer, and this answer, the effect, which is the result of the aspiration, depends upon each one, for it depends upon his receptivity. I know many people of this kind: they say, “Oh! but I aspire all the time and still I receive nothing.” It is impossible that they should receive nothing, in the sense that the answer is sure to come. But it is they who do not receive. The answer comes but they are not receptive, so they receive nothing.. . .

When you have an aspiration, a very active aspiration, your aspiration is going to do its work. It is going to call down the answer to what you aspire for. But if, later, you begin to think of something else or are not attentive or receptive, you do not even notice that your aspiration has received an answer. This happens very frequently. So people tell you: “I aspire and I don’t receive anything, I get no answer!” Yes, you do have an answer but you are not aware of it, because you continue to be active in this way, like a mill turning all the time.”

- The Mother [CWMCE, 6:115]

As I read these words, I am reminded to listen for guidance.  Just praying and asking for help does no good, if I do not do my part, by listening for guidance from the Divine. Each day I am learning to trust my inner guidance.

I take my time creeping slowly along the branches of life

I blend in with nature so well, that it is hard for you to see me

I do not care if I am noticed that much

I am happy enjoying the view

Sometimes, when I need to, I pick up speed and scurry along

But most of the time I go along at a relaxed pace

You should try a relaxed pace

You might enjoy it and begin the see the world in a different light.

The experiences I write about in this book have been transforming. I want to share those experiences with you, not with the hope you will have the exact same experiences, but because the way spirit has worked with me in the writing of this book, can be supportive to you on your own unique spiritual path.

Following is a quote from the beginning of the book:

“I invite you to join me on my spiritual journey.  It is my hope that my story will touch you not only within your everyday, “go-to-the-grocery-store” conscious mind, but will touch you on a deeper spiritual level.  Be part of my story as you read the pages of this book. I have come to believe that you and I communicate on many levels of consciousness. Right now, your mind is focused on reading the words that I have written and that have been printed on the page. I need written language in order to communicate my story to you. But there is another dimension of consciousness, that none of us is aware of in our every day logically oriented state of mind. In the everyday state of mind, you and I are separate. In a deeper state, we are One.  There is a deeper and broader consciousness that I speak of now: a realm where part of you, part of me and part of every human being exists. We communicate all the time in this other dimension: perhaps when we are sleeping or in a deep state of meditation.  Our spiritual selves are not limited to our physical bodies, and can travel into spiritual realms where we can communicate.”

Read Cosmic Connection: Messages for a Better World and then blog with me about it.

Can WE Evolve? December 8, 2009

Like the flower evolves into beauty from a simple seed, can we evolve into more compassionate and caring people, filled with the beauty of unconditional love?

We use spiritual terms quite often and speak of love, beauty and truth.  But can we each day, try to understand more about these spiritual qualities we speak of?

Words come to us all too easy, and yet we struggle as we try to merge with the real vibrations of the words that can so easily roll off our tongues.

Life is a constant classroom for our spiritual unfoldment.  In our busy lives can we find the time to meditate and concentrate on the spiritual qualties we speak of?  Can we avoid creating all kinds of fancy new buzz words? However popular, sometimes all this “lingo” distracts us from the true spiritual qualities: the simple qualties of love, beauty and truth.
